Lanlivery Board School, Cornwall. 1979
Built in 1877, this is a good example of a small rural Board School Built under the Elementary Education Act 1870 known as Forsters Education Act. Under the Act the Local Authorities were tasked with providing an elementary schooling for children residing in their areas between the ages of 5-13 years. The Board members were elected by the ratepayers under a voting system different from national elections, since female householders could vote and stand for office. The Education Boards had powers to finance and make by-laws to be tabled before Parliament. The Act established the foundations of English elementary education which was firmly enforced through reforms contained in a number of further Acts.
