EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent Lizard lighthouse perched atop a cliff in Landewednack, Cornwall. Taken before 1903, this historical landmark was built by Thomas Fonnereau in 1751 as a twin coal-fired light and later converted to oil in 1811. In an effort to enhance its navigational capabilities, the lighthouse underwent further modifications with the installation of electricity in 1874. The photograph showcases the eastern tower's rotating lens, which was added in 1903 while simultaneously removing the western tower light. This upgrade greatly improved visibility for ships navigating along Cornwall's south coast. The unknown photographer skillfully captures the sheer grandeur of this iconic structure against a backdrop of rugged cliffs and crashing waves. Over time, technological advancements led to automation of the lighthouse operations in 1998. Today, it stands as a testament to both engineering ingenuity and maritime history. Its significance extends beyond its functional purpose; it has become an emblematic symbol of Cornish heritage. This remarkable image invites viewers to reflect on centuries past when brave keepers manned these lights through treacherous weather conditions, guiding vessels safely along Cornwall's coastline. It serves as a reminder that even amidst modernization and automation, there is value in preserving our rich cultural legacy embodied by structures like Lizard lighthouse.
