EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the picturesque Housel Bay, Landewednack, Cornwall on a sunny day of June 22nd, 1908. The focal point of this stunning image is none other than the majestic Lizard lighthouse standing tall against the backdrop of an endless sea and rugged cliffs. Originally constructed by Thomas Fonnereau in 1751 as a twin coal-fired light, this historic landmark underwent several transformations over the years. In 1811, it was converted to oil before being electrified in 1874. Notably, a rotating lens was installed in the eastern tower in 1903 while simultaneously removing the western tower light. The photographer Herbert Hughes skillfully captures not only these architectural details but also includes two prominent natural features known as Bumble Rock and Lions Den within his frame. These elements add depth and character to an already breathtaking scene. As we gaze at this timeless photograph, we are reminded of Cornwall's rich maritime history and its reliance on navigation lights such as those provided by Trinity House. This particular image encapsulates both the beauty of nature and man-made ingenuity harmoniously coexisting along Cornwall's south coast. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum for future generations to appreciate, this print serves as a visual testament to our enduring fascination with historical landmarks like Lizard lighthouse that have stood strong against time's relentless tide.
