EDITORS COMMENTS
Naval Reunion, Fowey, Cornwall. October 1991: A Heartwarming Gathering of Heroes". In this poignant print captured by photographer Jonathan Barker, we are transported back to a momentous reunion in the picturesque town of Fowey. The year is 1991 and a group of naval veterans has returned to their wartime base for an emotional gathering with their comrades. These brave men belonged to the Royal Navy's esteemed 551 Assault Flotilla Group, stationed in Fowey during World War II. They played a vital role in the historic D-Day landings and the liberation of the Channel Islands. Now, decades later, they have come together once again to reminisce about their shared experiences and pay tribute to fallen friends. The photograph showcases three distinguished officers who made this nostalgic trip: Lt Fred Grant, Lt Tony Drew, and Lt Earnest Pallant. Standing proudly alongside them is Mayor Hilda Court – a symbol of gratitude from the local community for their service. Taken within the walls of Fowey Hall – now transformed into a hotel but once serving as winter quarters for these gallant sailors – this image radiates warmth and camaraderie. It captures not only memories but also enduring bonds forged through adversity. Preserved at the Royal Cornwall Museum, this print immortalizes an extraordinary chapter in history when ordinary men became heroes. Their unwavering dedication continues to inspire generations today.
