The Harbour, Cadgwith, Cornwall. 1908
A man and woman admire the visiting French ketch Nouvelle Marie, moored at Cadgwith. The ship was lost with all hands in 1909 off the coast of Glamorgan. The large thatched house at the top left of the photograph is Bodrigy, built by the Johnson family, of Trewithen in about 1905. The house burnt down in the early 1960s, leaving only the ground floor. The remains of the house were remodelled into a bungalow after the fire. Photographer: Herbert Hughes. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1908 showcases the picturesque harbour of Cadgwith, Cornwall. As we delve into the image, a man and woman stand in awe, their eyes fixed upon the elegant French ketch Nouvelle Marie that has graced these shores. Little did they know that tragedy would befall this beautiful vessel just a year later when it was lost with all hands off the coast of Glamorgan. Intriguingly, our attention is drawn to the grand thatched house perched atop the cliffs on the left side of the photograph. Known as Bodrigy, this magnificent abode was constructed by the Johnson family from Trewithen around 1905. Sadly, fate dealt a cruel hand to Bodrigy in the early 1960s when it succumbed to flames and only its ground floor remained standing. However, resilience prevailed as what remained of this once majestic residence was transformed into a charming bungalow after enduring such devastation. Renowned photographer Herbert Hughes skillfully captured this moment in time; his lens immortalizing not only an enchanting seascape but also glimpses into fashion and architecture of yesteryear. The Cornish sea stretches out before us while rowing boats dotting its surface add an air of tranquility to this idyllic scene. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from Royal Cornwall Museum, let us reflect on how history intertwines with nature's beauty and human endeavors - forever leaving imprints upon our hearts and minds.
