Red-masked Parakeet (Psittacara erythrogenys), Ecuador or Peru, South America

The Red-masked Parakeet originates from South America and is grass green with a solid red plumage mask covering the forecrown, crown and cheeks. It is one of the best talking birds and therefore is a popular pet. The species has declined in Ecuador and Peru, due to habitat loss and fragmentation, along with trapping for the pet trade. Escaped pets have led to wild parakeet colonies in North America. Collected by Mrs Moor in 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vibrant beauty of a Red-masked Parakeet, native to South America. The grass green plumage is accentuated by a striking red mask that covers its forecrown, crown, and cheeks. Known for their exceptional talking abilities, these parakeets have become popular pets among bird enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the species has faced significant challenges in Ecuador and Peru due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by human activities. Additionally, trapping for the pet trade has further contributed to their decline in these regions. However, it is interesting to note that escaped pets have established wild parakeet colonies in North America. The photograph was collected by Mrs Moor back in 1909 and now forms part of the Cornish Natural History Collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum. This remarkable specimen serves as a testament to both the diversity of avian life and our responsibility towards conservation efforts. Mike Searle's skillful photography captures every intricate detail of this colorful bird's feathers with precision. The vivid hues showcased in this image remind us of nature's awe-inspiring creations while also highlighting the importance of preserving such unique species for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
