Long-tailed Widowbird (Euplectes progne), Buffelsdoorn Estate, Klerksdorp, South Africa
A male Long-tailed Widowbird in breeding plumage, perched on a branch. The feathers are almost entirely black with orange and white shoulders, or epaulets. The bird's exceptionally long tail, which can measure up to 50 cm, is only present during the breeding season. Birds of the Weaver family, such as the Long-tailed Widowbird, are noted for their elaborate nest-building techniques using grass stems and other plant fibres. Collected by Mr W.H. Oliver in 1907.
