First World War Victory Medal 1914-1919

This medal was awarded to Lieutenant Colonel F. Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The Victory medal (also called the Allied or Inter-Allied Victory medal) was a UK and British Empire First World War campaign medal issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914-1915 Star and to most of those who were awarded the British War medal - it was not awarded singly. Designed by W. McMillan, this bronze medal depicts the winged figure, Victory, bearing an olive branch. The reverse depicts a wreath surrounding the inscription THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION, 1914-1919. The colours of the ribbon are vertical stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet merged into a rainbow pattern. A bronze oak leaf clasp, received in recognition of being mentioned in despatches, is attached to the ribbon. TRURI : 1931.40.57

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the First World War Victory Medal 1914-1919, a symbol of Lieutenant Colonel F. Call's remarkable service. The medal is part of an impressive collection belonging to the esteemed Call family, comprising a total of 17 campaign medals spanning from the Peninsular War to the Great War. Lieutenant Colonel F. Call served with great honor and dedication in the Royal Irish Regiment, previously known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. This renowned regiment played a significant role in various conflicts until its disbandment in 1922. Crafted by W. McMillan, this bronze medal portrays Victory herself, adorned with wings and carrying an olive branch—a powerful representation of triumph and peace. On its reverse side lies a wreath encircling the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION, 1914-1919" serving as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices made during that tumultuous period. The vibrant ribbon accompanying this prestigious medal features vertical stripes merging into a rainbow pattern—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet—a visual testament to unity amidst adversity. Notably attached to this distinguished ribbon is a bronze oak leaf clasp—an emblematic recognition for being mentioned in despatches—an additional testament to Lieutenant Colonel F. Call's exceptional bravery on the battlefield. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's extensive archives by Mike Searle's expert lensmanship captures both historical significance and artistic beauty embodied by this extraordinary artifact from our shared past.
