EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling Market Square of St Just, Cornwall, before 1906. The focal point is the magnificent horse bus named Loyal, which operated between Penzance and St Just. Parked outside the iconic Commercial Hotel, owned at that time by Sydney Henry Coles, a group of individuals eagerly pose for the camera. In this snapshot of history, we catch sight of a young girl walking towards us with an air of innocence. Two police constables stand nearby, their watchful eyes observing the scene unfolding before them. Alongside them are two gentlemen engrossed in conversation or perhaps awaiting their turn to board the horse bus. As our gaze shifts upwards, we notice a lady comfortably seated on the driver's seat of Loyal; her poised presence suggests she may be involved in its operation. Meanwhile, from one of the windows on the top floor of an adjacent building next to the hotel, another lady curiously peers out at all that unfolds below. The identity of this unknown photographer remains shrouded in mystery but through their lens they have captured a moment frozen in time - an enchanting glimpse into Cornish life during Victorian and Edwardian times. This evocative image invites us to imagine ourselves among these characters from yesteryear as they go about their daily lives amidst quaint surroundings filled with charm and nostalgia.
