The Rowton House (named Tower House, built in 1902) on Fielding Street, Whitechapel, East London. Rowton Houses, of which six were erected around London, were large, purpose built, low cost hostels or doss houses for working men. They were established by Lord Rowton (Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1838-1903)

Built in 1902, this structure was one of six large, purpose-built Rowton Houses erected around London by the philanthropist Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1st Viscount Rowton (1838-1903). These institutions were designed to provide low-cost shelter for working men, offering a much-needed alternative to overcrowded and unsanitary workhouses and doss houses that were prevalent during the early 1900s. Lord Rowton, a wealthy businessman and politician, was deeply moved by the plight of the homeless and the destitute in London. He established the Rowton Houses as a charitable endeavor, providing a roof over the heads of thousands of men in need. Each house offered clean, comfortable beds, hot meals, and a sense of community, helping to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and homelessness.
