John Ross, a British naval officer and polar explorer, led the first major search for the Northwest Passage after the failure of the Franklin Expedition. Ross's expedition aimed to find a northern sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Ross and his team, including his brother James Clark Ross, set sail from England in May 1829 aboard the ships HMS Victory and HMS Alexander. Upon reaching the Arctic, Ross's team faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions, limited resources, and the constant threat of scurvy. Despite these adversities, they pressed on, making significant discoveries, including the discovery of the magnetic North Pole in 1831.
