In this image from ancient history, the Sacred Geese of Juno are depicted in mid-flight, raising an alarm that would save the city of Rome from certain destruction. The year was 390 BC, and the Gallic Gauls, a formidable and warlike people from central Europe, had launched a surprise attack on the Roman Republic. The Gauls, known for their superior military tactics and fierce fighting skills, had managed to breach the Roman walls and were making their way towards the heart of the city. The Roman soldiers, taken aback by the suddenness of the attack, were struggling to hold the line and repel the invaders. But just as all hope seemed lost, the Sacred Geese of Juno, the goddess of Rome and protector of the Roman people, sprang into action. According to legend, these geese were sacred animals kept in the Temple of Juno on the Capitoline Hill, the citadel of Rome. They were believed to be descendants of the geese that had warned the Romans of an earlier attack by the Etruscans. As the Gauls approached, the geese began to make an unusual racket, cackling and squawking loudly. Their alarm call was not lost on the Roman soldiers, who quickly roused themselves and turned the tide of the battle. The Romans counter-attacked with renewed vigor, driving the Gauls back and securing their city. This image captures the dramatic moment of the geese in flight, their wings spread wide as they sound the alarm. The scene is one of chaos and frenzy, with soldiers clashing swords and shields, and the cacophony of battle cries and animal noises filling the air.
