EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, Roger Walden, a pivotal figure in English history during the reign of King Richard II, is depicted in full regalia as the Archbishop of Canterbury. Walden, who served as the King's secretary and treasurer, was unexpectedly appointed to the position of Archbishop in 1397, following the death of Thomas Arundel. However, his tenure was brief, as the Pope declared him an intruder, having been installed without the Pope's approval. Walden's attire in the print reflects his ecclesiastical rank. He wears a richly decorated mitre, the tall, pointed hat symbolizing his position as an archbishop, and carries a crozier, the pastoral staff used as a symbol of spiritual authority. The intricate embroidery and luxurious fabrics used in the creation of his vestments underscore the grandeur and opulence of the time. Despite being removed from the position of Archbishop of Canterbury, Walden did not lose favor with King Richard II. He was later appointed as the Bishop of London, continuing to serve the monarch in a significant capacity. The year 1406 marks the end of this period in Walden's life, as documented by this historical image. The intrigue and political machinations of the late 14th and early 15th centuries are brought to life in this striking representation of Roger Walden, a man who rose to the highest echelons of power in England, only to face challenges from the very institution he sought to serve.
