EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the Mary Evans Picture Library transports us back to the 17th century, circa 1630, where the legendary tale of Robin Hood unfolds. The photograph depicts a pivotal moment in the folklore of this iconic outlaw. Robin Hood, dressed in his traditional green hood and tunic, is seen exchanging clothes with an elderly woman in a secluded forest clearing. The bishop and his men, hot on Robin's trail, are not far behind. Robin Hood's cunning and quick thinking save him from capture once again. He skillfully swaps places with the old woman, donning her simple garments and blending seamlessly into the crowd as the bishop and his men pass by. With a wink and a nod to the woman, Robin Hood escapes, leaving the bishop and his men none the wiser. But Robin's mischief doesn't end there. Once out of danger, he sets his sights on the bishop, who unwittingly becomes the next target of the outlaw's antics. Robin Hood deprives the bishop of his gold, leaving him penniless and humiliated. To add insult to injury, Robin forces the bishop to sing Mass in the forest, further embarrassing him in front of his men. This photograph, with its rich historical context and intriguing narrative, offers a glimpse into the world of Robin Hood and the adventures that made him a beloved figure in English folklore. The old woman's clever ruse, Robin's daring escape, and the bishop's humiliation all come to life in this image, making it a must-have for any history or folklore enthusiast.
