EDITORS COMMENTS
June 1895: Lord Roberts Triumphantly Enters Pretoria after the Boer Surrender This historic photograph captures the moment when British General Lord Roberts, clad in pith helmet and khaki uniform, enters Pretoria, the capital city of the Transvaal Republic, following the Boers' surrender on June 5, 1895. The relief of Mafeking, which had occurred earlier in the year, had led many to believe that the Second Boer War was coming to an end. However, the conflict dragged on for another two years. The Second Boer War, also known as the South African War, was a prolonged and brutal conflict between the British Empire and the two independent Boer states, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The war began in October 1899 and was marked by guerrilla warfare, scorched earth tactics, and the use of concentration camps. Despite the hardships and setbacks, Roberts' entry into Pretoria was a significant turning point in the war. The capture of the Boer capital represented a major victory for the British and boosted morale among the troops and the British public. The war eventually ended in May 1902, with the signing of the Peace of Vereeniging. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the events that shaped the history of Africa and the British Empire in the late 19th century. It also underscores the complex and often violent history of colonialism and the struggle for power and resources in Africa.
