EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the determined spirit of Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861), the Irish-born Australian explorer, as he and his team prepare for their ill-fated expedition into the uncharted territories of the Australian outback in 1860. Burke, with his long, flowing beard and folded arms, exudes a sense of resolve and leadership. The campsite, surrounded by the barren, arid landscape, underscores the harsh conditions the explorers would face on their journey. Burke, along with his companion William John Wills, embarked on this ambitious exploration with the goal of crossing Australia from Melbourne in the southeast to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north, a distance of over 1,700 miles (2,700 kilometers). They set out with a team of 19 men, 27 camels, and ample supplies. However, their journey was fraught with challenges, including extreme weather conditions, limited water sources, and a lack of accurate maps. Despite these obstacles, the team pressed on, making good progress until they reached the desolate and inhospitable Cooper Creek in July 1861. It was here that their fortunes took a turn for the worse. Stricken with dysentery and other illnesses, the team was forced to abandon their expedition and head back to civilization. Tragically, only six members of the team, including Burke and Wills, survived the return journey. Their remains were discovered months later, bringing an end to this ill-fated expedition. This historical photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of Robert O'Hara Burke and his team, who dared to explore the unknown territories of Australia, ultimately paying the ultimate price for their ambition.
