EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure (1807-1873) is depicted in the clothing he wore during his groundbreaking Arctic expeditions, earning him the title of the discoverer of the Northwest Passage. McClure, a British naval officer and explorer, is shown with a determined expression, dressed in a heavy fur-lined coat, woolen trousers, and a fur hat, all essential items for surviving the harsh Arctic conditions. Born in County Down, Ireland, McClure joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly distinguished himself as a capable and resourceful officer. However, it was his exploratory endeavors in the Arctic that would cement his place in history. In 1850, McClure led the HMS Investigator on an expedition to search for the missing Franklin Expedition, which had disappeared while attempting to find the Northwest Passage. After enduring numerous hardships, McClure and his crew finally succeeded in locating the abandoned ships of the Franklin Expedition and rescued the surviving members. In 1854, McClure embarked on his own expedition to find the Northwest Passage, which he achieved in 1854, becoming the first person to navigate the passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This remarkable achievement brought McClure international acclaim and earned him a knighthood from Queen Victoria. The photograph captures McClure in his element, dressed in the clothes that allowed him to endure the extreme Arctic conditions and achieve his historic discoveries. This image serves as a testament to his unwavering determination, courage, and resilience, making it an invaluable piece of historical documentation.
