EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the serene beauty of Robert Louis Stevenson's grave on Mount Vaea in Western Samoa. The Scottish author, renowned for his literary works of adventure and romance, including "Treasure Island" and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," found refuge and inspiration in this South Pacific paradise during the latter years of his life. Stevenson, who had long dreamed of living in the tropics, arrived in Samoa in 1890 with his wife Fanny and their young son Lloyd. They built a house called Vailima, which still stands today as a museum dedicated to the author's memory. Stevenson's health, however, continued to decline, and he passed away on December 3, 1894, at the age of 44. The tablet atop his grave, which bears a self-penned epitaph, reads, "Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie. Glad did I live and gladly die, And I laid me down with a will. This is my last and greatest work." The inscription reflects the author's adventurous spirit and his deep connection to nature, which are themes that resonate throughout his body of work. The tablet, made of stone, is a testament to the enduring legacy of this literary giant, who continues to captivate readers around the world. The photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the tranquil setting where Stevenson's ashes now rest, surrounded by the lush vegetation and breathtaking views of the Samoan landscape.
