In this evocative photograph, the stern yet thoughtful visage of Bishop Robert Ferrar (1508-1555) gazes out at the viewer, his signature boldly inscribed below in a flowing, confident hand. The bishop, who served as the Bishop of St David's in Wales during the tumultuous reign of Mary Tudor, is best known for his refusal to conform to the religious policies of the queen. Born into a prominent Catholic family, Ferrar was married with children when he was appointed to the bishopric in 1553. However, his loyalty to the Protestant faith, which had gained ground during the reign of his predecessor, Edward VI, put him at odds with the newly installed Catholic queen. Mary Tudor, determined to restore Catholicism in England, demanded that all bishops take the Oath of Supremacy, acknowledging her as the supreme head of the Church of England. Ferrar, along with several other bishops, refused to comply. As a result, Ferrar was arrested and brought to trial on charges of heresy. Despite his eloquent defense, he was found guilty and sentenced to be burnt at the stake on February 13, 1555. His execution, which took place in Llanthony Priory in Monmouth, was a grim spectacle that drew large crowds. This photograph, an intriguing glimpse into the past, offers a poignant reminder of the religious upheavals that marked the Tudor era. The autograph of this brave and principled man, who paid the ultimate price for his convictions, adds a personal touch to the historical record.
