EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at RNAS Anglesey, the Royal Naval Air Station and aerodrome located on the isle of Anglesey, Wales, during World War One. Established in 1915, RNAS Anglesey played a crucial role in the defense of the British coastline against potential air raids from German Zeppelin airships, or 'Dirigible's.' The large, rigid-framed structures in the distance are Sea Scout Class airships of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), the maritime branch of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) which merged with the RAF in 1918. The Sea Scouts, designated Type N Class airships, were designed specifically for coastal patrol and anti-submarine warfare. They were smaller and more maneuverable than their larger Zeppelin counterparts, making them well-suited for the narrow waters surrounding the British Isles. The Sea Scouts were armed with a single 0.303-inch Vickers machine gun, which could be operated from an open cockpit or from inside the gondola. In this photograph, we see several Sea Scout airships moored at RNAS Anglesey, their distinctive silhouettes framed against the grey skies and the rugged coastline. The air station's hangars and other buildings can be seen in the foreground, while the vast expanse of the Irish Sea stretches out beyond the airfield. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role that RNAS Anglesey and its Sea Scout airships played in defending the British coastline during the early years of World War One.
