EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of signing the Treaty of Bucharest between Germany, represented by German Foreign Secretary Richard von Kuhlmann, and Romania, on May 7, 1918, in the elegant Cotroceni Palace near Bucharest. The Austrian counterpart, Earl Stephan Burian-Rajecz, Austrian Foreign Secretary, looks on as the two diplomats put pen to paper, marking an agreement that was ultimately nullified by the terms of the Armistice of 11 November 1918. The Treaty of Bucharest was a significant event in European diplomacy during the tumultuous period leading up to the end of World War I. The image portrays the intense focus and seriousness of the negotiators as they work to bring about a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The grandeur of the setting, with its ornate furnishings and opulent decor, serves as a stark contrast to the political tensions and uncertainties of the time. The significance of this moment in history is further emphasized by the presence of these two prominent diplomats, whose names would be forever linked to the complex web of alliances and negotiations that shaped the Eastern European political landscape during this period.
