Born on September 8, 1157, in Oxford, England, Richard was the third son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He ascended to the throne in 1189, following his father's death, and ruled until his own demise in 1199. In this evocative image, Richard is shown in full regalia, wearing a flowing robe adorned with ermine fur and a crown resting atop his head.
