EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and complex character of Richard II, King of England (1367-1399), as depicted in a painting by the renowned artist, Samuel Henry Monkton Shaw (1804-1874). Richard II, the last of the Plantagenet monarchs of the House of Lancaster, ascended to the throne at the tender age of ten following the death of his father, Edward III. His reign, which began in 1377, was marked by a series of political and military challenges that tested his leadership and resolve. Richard II was known for his intellectual pursuits and his love of justice, but his rule was also marred by controversy and conflict. He faced rebellions from both the nobility and the common people, and his attempts to centralize power and assert his authority led to a deepening crisis. In 1399, Richard was deposed by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who went on to become Henry IV. This portrait of Richard II, created during Shaw's tenure as the official painter to Queen Victoria, offers a glimpse into the king's regal presence and the majesty of the English monarchy during this tumultuous period in history. Shaw's skillful use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail, bring the king to life and transport us back to the late medieval world. The portrait also serves as a reminder of the enduring fascination with the complexities of monarchy and the human dramas that have shaped the course of English history.
