EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 14th-century English diptych, known as the Richard II Diptych - 2, showcases an intricately detailed right-hand panel depicting King Richard II of England (reign 1377-1399) being presented to the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus by three revered figures of English history and sainthood: King and Saint Edward the Confessor (reign 1042-1066), Saint Edmund (d. 869 or 870), and Saint John the Baptist. The scene is set in a richly decorated and ornate interior, with the figures dressed in regal attire and surrounded by symbols of their power and holiness. Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king before the Norman Conquest, is depicted in his royal robes, holding a model of a church and a scepter, symbolizing his role as both king and patron saint of England. Saint Edmund, the martyred king of East Anglia, is shown in monastic habit, holding a model of a church and a palm branch, symbolizing his martyrdom and his status as a protector of England. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, is depicted in his traditional camel's hair cloak and holding a cross and a lamb, symbolizing his role as the herald of Christ. In the center, the Virgin Mary cradles the infant Jesus, who extends his right hand in blessing towards Richard II. The king, in turn, bows in reverence, his left hand raised in a gesture of submission and respect. The diptych, which dates from circa 1367, is a testament to the rich artistic and historical traditions of medieval England. Its intricate details and symbolism offer a glimpse into the religious and political landscape of the time, as well as the deep reverence and devotion that the English people held for their kings and saints.
