Revolution of Theriso - The revolutionaries & Venizelos

In 1898, the Great Powers declared Crete as an independent Cretan State, under the rule of the Sultan. Yet, the administration of commander Prince George irritated the Cretans, who in March 1905 revolted - the famous Revolution of Theriso (the participants of which are depicted here), thus forcing Prince George to resign and appoint commandeer, Alexandros Zaimis. The leader of this revolt was Eleftherios Venizelos (1864 - 1936) - pictured in the centre of this group

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, a group of Cretan revolutionaries, led by Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936), are depicted during the Revolution of Theriso in 1905. The Cretan State had been declared independent from the Ottoman Empire by the Great Powers in 1898, but the administration of Commander Prince George proved to be a source of frustration for the Cretans. In March 1905, the Cretans, tired of the oppressive rule, rose up in revolt against Prince George, forcing him to resign and appoint Commander Alexandros Zaimis as the new administrator. Eleftherios Venizelos, a prominent Cretan politician and future Prime Minister of Greece, emerged as the leader of the Revolution of Theriso. Born in Crete, Venizelos had a deep connection to the island and its people. His leadership and charisma inspired the Cretans to fight for their rights and independence. The revolution marked a significant turning point in the history of Crete and paved the way for its eventual union with Greece in 1913. This photograph captures a moment in time when the Cretan people, led by Venizelos, stood up against an oppressive regime and fought for their freedom and self-determination. The image serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the Cretan people and the important role that Venizelos played in shaping the political landscape of Greece. The Revolution of Theriso is an essential chapter in the history of Greece and the Greek people, and this photograph offers a glimpse into that rich and complex past.
