Wider Image - Great Barrier Reef At Risk

Homes can be seen along a creek and inlet in the coastal town of Hervey Bay, north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, June 9, 2015. UNESCO World Heritage delegates recently snorkelled on Australias Great Barrier Reef, thousands of coral reefs, which stretch over 2, 000 km off the northeast coast. Surrounded by manta rays, dolphins and reef sharks, their mission was to check the health of the worlds largest living ecosystem, which brings in billions of dollars a year in tourism. Some coral has been badly damaged and animal species, including dugong and large green turtles, are threatened. UNESCO will say on Wednesday whether it will place the reef on a list of endangered World Heritage sites, a move the Australian government wants to avoid at all costs, having lobbied hard overseas. Earlier this year, UNESCO said the reefs outlook was " poor". REUTERS/David Gray TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the idyllic coastal town of Hervey Bay, nestled along a creek and inlet in Queensland, Australia. The image showcases the delicate balance between human civilization and nature's wonders as homes dot the landscape against the backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef. In June 2015, UNESCO World Heritage delegates embarked on a snorkeling expedition to assess the health of this magnificent ecosystem that spans over 2,000 km along Australia's northeast coast. As they swam amidst manta rays, dolphins, and reef sharks, their mission was to evaluate the state of the world's largest living organism – an ecosystem that generates billions of dollars annually through tourism. However, alarming signs emerged during their exploration. Some coral reefs displayed severe damage while iconic animal species like dugongs and large green turtles faced threats to their survival. These distressing observations prompted concerns about whether to classify this natural wonder as an endangered World Heritage site. The Australian government fervently opposed such a designation and lobbied extensively overseas to protect its prized possession. Earlier in the year, UNESCO had already expressed pessimism about the future outlook for these reefs. As we await UNESCO's decision on whether to list this fragile ecosystem as endangered or not on Wednesday, David Gray's photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both humanity's impact on nature and our responsibility towards preserving these invaluable treasures for generations to come.
