The shadow of a gunfighter is cast on the asphalt as competitors practice prior to the start of the Canadian Open Fast Draw Championships in Aldergrove, British Columbia July 21, 2013. The present-day Fast Draw competition was born from the Hollywood myth of the western gunfighter, and the idea is to draw a single action revolver from a holster, and cock, fire and hit a designated target in the shortest possible time. No live ammunition is ever used, only blank cartridges or wax bullets. The targets are either a metal silhouette used with wax bullets or balloons that burst from the muzzle blast from the blank cartridges. A light atop the timer signals the competitor when to fire and once the target is hit, it turns the timer off, measuring the speed to thousandths of a second. Picture taken July 21, 2013. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, the intense atmosphere of the Canadian Open Fast Draw Championships is beautifully captured. The shadow of a gunfighter looms large on the asphalt as competitors engage in rigorous practice sessions before the commencement of the event. The origins of this present-day Fast Draw competition can be traced back to the Hollywood myth surrounding western gunfighters. Participants are required to draw a single action revolver from their holsters with lightning speed, cock it, fire, and hit a designated target in record time. However, safety remains paramount as no live ammunition is ever used during these thrilling matches; instead, blank cartridges or wax bullets take center stage. The targets themselves add an extra element of excitement to this exhilarating sport. Whether it be metal silhouettes utilized with wax bullets or balloons bursting from muzzle blasts caused by blank cartridges, precision and accuracy are key. A light atop the timer serves as both a signal for competitors to fire and an indicator that stops timing once the target has been successfully hit. This advanced technology measures speeds down to thousandths of a second, showcasing just how closely contested each round truly is. Through Andy Clark's lens on July 21st, 2013 in Aldergrove, British Columbia, we witness not only skilled marksmanship but also a celebration of Western folklore brought vividly to life in modern times.
