EDITORS COMMENTS
Rehoboam, the young and inexperienced king of Israel, is depicted in this historical print from the Bible's Second Book of Chronicles. After his father Solomon's death, Rehoboam was faced with the challenge of ruling over a restless and discontented people. Seeking advice on how to rule justly and maintain peace, he consulted with the elders, who urged him to be moderate and show compassion to his subjects. However, Rehoboam was swayed by the persuasive words of his younger advisers, who urged him to act tough and assert his authority. In a moment of bravado, Rehoboam vowed to chastise his people with scorpions, a threat that only served to fuel their rebellion. This print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the moment of decision for Rehoboam. The king, dressed in royal robes and wearing a crown, sits on a throne, surrounded by his advisers. The elder advisers, with their graying beards and wise expressions, can be seen in the background, imploring the king to listen to their counsel. The younger advisers, in contrast, are shown urging Rehoboam on with animated gestures and determined expressions. The events that followed Rehoboam's hasty decision would have far-reaching consequences for the history of ancient Israel. The rebellion would ultimately lead to the division of the kingdom, with the ten northern tribes breaking away to form the kingdom of Israel, while the southern tribes remained loyal to Rehoboam and became the kingdom of Judah. This print, with its intricate details and rich historical significance, offers a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of ancient political power struggles and the consequences of bad advice.
