EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Reginald McKenna, British Banker and Liberal Politician: Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Asquith. This photograph captures Reginald McKenna, a prominent British banker and Liberal politician, in the prime of his political career. Born on March 20, 1863, in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, McKenna rose to become one of the most influential figures in British politics during the early 20th century. McKenna's career in banking began with the National Provincial Bank, where he eventually became its chairman in 1912. However, his true calling was in politics. He joined the Liberal Party and was appointed as Home Secretary in 1915, serving under Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. In this role, McKenna played a crucial part in managing the home front during World War I, overseeing the Home Office and implementing measures to maintain law and order. In 1916, McKenna was promoted to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer, making him the chief financial officer of the British government. During his tenure, he implemented a series of budgets aimed at financing the war effort and stabilizing the economy. One of his most notable achievements was the introduction of the McKenna Duties, a set of protective tariffs designed to shield British industries from foreign competition. McKenna's political career came to an end in 1921, when he resigned from the Cabinet due to disagreements with the Coalition government led by David Lloyd George. He continued to serve as a Member of Parliament until 1924. Reginald McKenna passed away on February 25, 1943. This photograph serves as a testament to McKenna's significant contributions to British politics and finance during a pivotal period in history. His legacy continues to be remembered for his role in managing the home front during World War I and his economic policies as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
