This evocative image captures the tumultuous scene of the Duke of Wellington's confrontation with an enraged London mob during the height of the Reform Bill agitations in 1832. The Duke of Wellington, a popular hero of the British people for his victories against Napoleon, found himself at odds with the political currents of the time. He was a staunch opponent of the Reform Bill, which aimed to expand the franchise and increase the representation of the middle classes in Parliament. As the bill made its way through Parliament, tensions in the streets of London began to boil over. On the evening of April 4, 1832, a large and violent mob gathered outside the Carlton Club in Pall Mall, where Wellington and other conservative politicians were meeting. The mob, fueled by alcohol and political passion, demanded that the Duke and his allies withdraw their opposition to the bill. Despite the danger, Wellington refused to back down. He emerged from the club, mounted his horse, and rode through the throng of angry protesters. The mob, enraged by his defiance, pelted him with stones and other projectiles. Wellington was struck several times, but he managed to make his escape. This photograph, taken from a contemporary print, provides a vivid and dramatic depiction of this historic moment.
