1892 1983 Journalist Rebecca Sava

EDITORS COMMENTS
Rebecca West, née Cicely Isabel Fairfield (1892-1983), was a prolific British journalist, author, and literary critic, known for her incisive wit and uncompromising stance on social and political issues. This black-and-white photograph, titled "Sava Drg," captures West in her later years, with a thoughtful expression that belies the depth of her intellect. Born in London, England, West began her writing career in the 1910s, contributing to various publications such as the Manchester Guardian and the New Statesman. She gained international recognition with the publication of her book "Black Lamb and Grey Falcon" (1941), a travelogue about Yugoslavia that showcased her extensive knowledge of history, culture, and politics. West's journalistic work was marked by her fearless reporting and unapologetic commentary on controversial topics. She was a vocal advocate for women's rights, and her book "The Sexes and the Marriage Market" (1911) was a groundbreaking exploration of gender roles and relationships. Her other notable works include "The Meaning of Treason" (1931), "A Train of Powder" (1941), and "The Clarion" (1948). Despite her success as a writer, West remained committed to journalism throughout her career. She covered major events such as the Nuremberg Trials and the Eichmann trial, and her reporting on the latter earned her a place in history as one of the first journalists to cover the trial in detail. This photograph of Rebecca West, taken in later life, serves as a reminder of her enduring legacy as a trailblazing journalist and author who challenged societal norms and pushed boundaries with her insightful and thought-provoking work.
