This powerful and evocative image captures Metacomet, also known as King Philip, the renowned Sachem, or chief, of the Wampanoag people in New England during the mid-17th century. Metacomet's leadership extended from present-day Rhode Island to eastern Massachusetts, making him a significant figure in the history of Native American tribes in the region. Born around 1639, Metacomet was the son of Wampanoag Sachem Massasoit and his English wife, Susanna, who had been married under an agreement brokered by the Pilgrims in 1621. This alliance, known as the Mayflower Compact, established a peaceful relationship between the English settlers and the Wampanoags, leading to the famous "First Thanksgiving" in 1621. However, tensions began to rise between the two groups as the English encroached on Wampanoag lands and resources. Metacomet, who assumed the role of Sachem after his father's death in 1662, became increasingly disillusioned with the English and their actions. In 1675, Metacomet's frustration boiled over, and he initiated a war against the English colonists, which came to be known as King Philip's War. This conflict, which lasted from 1675 to 1676, was one of the most destructive in American history, with an estimated 1,200 English settlers and 3,000 Native Americans killed. The war ended with the capture and execution of Metacomet in August 1676, marking the end of an era for the Wampanoag people and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the English colonies in New England.
