In this evocative photograph taken in the picturesque town of Cahors, France, in 1911, a 16-year-old boy courageously grasps and controls a rabid dog, its menacing snarl and bared teeth a terrifying sight for passers-by. The year was 1911, and the town of Cahors, situated in the south-west of France, was no stranger to the occasional outbreak of the deadly disease. Rabies, a viral disease that affects the nervous system, is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, most commonly through a bite. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal.
