As a doctor, Rabelais was well-versed in the latest medical knowledge of his time. He studied at the University of Montpellier, one of Europe's most prestigious medical schools, and later served as a surgeon in the army of King Henry II. Rabelais' most famous works, "Gargantua and Pantagruel," and "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel," are considered seminal texts in the history of French literature.
