This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Quiberon Bay, which took place on November 20, 1759, off the coast of Brittany, France. The British Admiral Edward Hawke, commanding a fleet of around 25 ships, is shown driving a larger French fleet under the command of the Marquis de Conflans into the shallow waters of Quiberon Bay. The French fleet, which numbered around 37 ships, had been attempting to break the British blockade of the French coast and provide much-needed supplies to the French army in Canada. However, Hawke's strategic maneuvering and superior seamanship proved decisive. The British fleet, with its superior gunnery and agility, was able to outmaneuver and either take or destroy most of the French ships. This victory marked a turning point in the Seven Years' War, weakening the French naval presence in the Atlantic and paving the way for British victory in Canada. The print, produced by Ford, captures the drama and intensity of the battle, with the waves crashing against the ships and the smoke from the guns filling the air.
