EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this image of the Queens Head Inn in Southwark, London, a historical pub that dates back to the early 1500s. This ancient tavern, located in the heart of Southwark, was once owned by a man named John Harvard. Harvard was a resident scholar at Emmanuel College in Cambridge during the late 1600s. After his death, he left his entire library and half of his estate to the University of Cambridge with the condition that it be used to establish a new college. In 1636, Emmanuel College accepted his bequest and founded a new institution, which later became Harvard University in Massachusetts, USA. The Queens Head Inn, with its timber-framed facade and quaint yard, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The inn's name is believed to have originated from the image of the Queen's head on the sign, a common practice during the Tudor era. The pub's walls have no doubt heard countless stories of travelers, scholars, and locals alike, making it a significant piece of both Southwark and Cambridge histories. This enchanting photograph, taken in 1883, captures the essence of the Queens Head Inn during a time when horse-drawn coaches were still a common sight on the streets. The image invites us to imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of the inn, where one could find a warm meal, a refreshing drink, and a place to rest weary feet. The Queens Head Inn stands as a testament to the rich history of Southwark and the lasting impact of John Harvard on both sides of the Atlantic.
