EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) is seen lovingly holding her eldest grandson, Prince Alexander of Battenberg (later Marquess of Carisbrooke) (1886-1960). The image was captured in 1887, during a time when the Battenberg children, including Princess Beatrice (b. 1857), were living with their grandmother at Windsor Castle. Queen Victoria, who had a deep affection for her youngest daughter, insisted that Beatrice remain in her care after her marriage to Prince Henry of Battenberg (1858-1896) in 1885. This decision meant that the Battenberg children, including Alexander, grew up in the loving environment of their grandmother's homes. Alexander, born on December 10, 1886, was the eldest child of the union between Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry. He would later serve in the British Army during World War I and hold the rank of Major-General. In 1917, due to anti-German sentiment during the war, the British royal family renounced their German titles, and the Battenbergs adopted the surname Mountbatten. Alexander became the 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke in 1917. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the close relationship between Queen Victoria and her grandchildren, particularly her youngest daughter and her eldest grandson. The image, which has been imported from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a valuable historical document that offers a glimpse into the personal lives of the British monarchy during the late Victorian era.
