EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Queen Kapiolani of Hawaii, the beloved consort of King David Kalakaua, during the Golden Jubilee year of Queen Victoria in 1887. Queen Kapiolani, born Lydia Liliuokalani, was the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii before the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Born in 1838, Kapiolani was the eldest daughter of Chiefess Emma Rooke and Prince Lot Kapuaiwa. She was educated in both traditional Hawaiian customs and Western ways, which made her an influential figure in Hawaiian society. In 1856, she married King David Kalakaua, who was 25 years her senior. Their marriage was a love match and was celebrated throughout the kingdom. The photograph shows Queen Kapiolani in her regal attire, adorned with lei and wearing a tiara. Her expression is serene and confident, reflecting her strong character and leadership. The background features a lush Hawaiian landscape, with palm trees and vibrant flowers adding to the tropical ambiance. The year 1887 marked the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign, and this photograph was likely taken to commemorate the occasion. Queen Kapiolani and King Kalakaua traveled to Europe to attend the celebrations, making this photograph an important record of their journey and their place in the international community of royalty. Despite the challenges and eventual downfall of the Hawaiian monarchy, Queen Kapiolani remained a beloved figure in Hawaiian history. Her legacy as a champion of Hawaiian culture and a symbol of resilience continues to inspire generations of Hawaiians and visitors to the islands.
