EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the elegance and grace of Queen Farida, also known as Queen Farisa of Egypt (1921-1988). Daughter of the powerful Pasha, Mohamed Zulficar, she was born Safinaz Zulficar in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1939, at the young age of 18, she was married to King Farouk I, the last monarch of Egypt and Sudan, in a grand ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Cairo. Upon her marriage, Safinaz was officially renamed Farida, which means "happy" or "joyful" in Arabic. The newly crowned queen quickly became a symbol of beauty and style in Egyptian society. Her fashionable attire, sophisticated demeanor, and captivating smile were the talk of the town. This photograph, taken during her reign, showcases Queen Farida's timeless elegance. Dressed in an intricately embroidered traditional Egyptian gown, she exudes confidence and poise. Her dark, expressive eyes are framed by delicate kohl eyeliner, a classic makeup look of the time. Her long, flowing hair is styled in soft waves, cascading down her shoulders. Despite her young age, Queen Farida took on various roles and responsibilities during her husband's reign. She was an active patron of the arts, supporting Egyptian musicians, artists, and writers. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights and education, and worked to improve the lives of Egyptian women and children. Unfortunately, Queen Farida's reign was short-lived. In 1952, King Farouk I was overthrown in a military coup, and the monarchy was abolished. Queen Farida and her family were forced into exile, and she spent the rest of her life in Europe. This photograph serves as a reminder of Queen Farida's beauty, grace, and the significant role she played in Egyptian history. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, and her story is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Egyptian people.
