Queen Eleanors Cross, Northampton

Queen Eleanors Cross, Northampton. The Eleanor crosses were 12 originally wooden, but later lavishly decorated stone, monuments, of which three survive intact, in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, marking the resting-places along the route taken by her body as it was taken to London. The Northampton cross is still standing at the edge of Delapre Abbey; the King stayed at nearby Northampton Castle. This cross was begun in 1291 by John of Battle. He worked with William of Ireland to carve the statues

EDITORS COMMENTS
Queen Eleanor's Cross, Northampton: A Historical Marker of Love and Devotion The print showcases the stunning and historic Queen Eleanor's Cross in Northampton, England. This cross is one of the three surviving intact Eleanor crosses, which were originally a line of twelve memorial monuments erected by King Edward I between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his beloved wife, Eleanor of Castile. These crosses marked the resting places along the route taken by her body as it was transported from Harlech Castle in Wales to London. The Northampton cross, located at the edge of Delapre Abbey, is a testament to the enduring love and devotion of King Edward I. The cross was begun in 1291 by John of Battle and William of Ireland, who worked together to carve the intricate statues adorning the cross. Originally, the crosses were wooden, but over the centuries, they were lavishly decorated with stone, as seen in the Northampton cross. King Edward I is believed to have stayed at nearby Northampton Castle during the construction of the cross. The historical significance of this cross is immense, as it stands as a symbol of the deep affection and respect Edward had for his wife, Eleanor of Castile. The crosses were not only memorials but also important landmarks along the route taken by the queen's body, making them significant historical sites in English history. The intricate carvings and statues on the Northampton cross depict various biblical scenes and religious figures, reflecting the deep spiritual connection between the king and his wife. The cross continues to captivate visitors with its historical and artistic significance, making it a must-see attraction for anyone interested in English history and architecture.
