EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative portrait captures the regal beauty and grace of Queen Anne (1665-1714), who reigned over the British monarchy from 1702 until her death in 1714. At the age of 36, Anne assumed the throne following the death of her predecessor, William III. Her reign was marked by political instability and conflict, including the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite the challenges she faced, Anne is remembered for her love of the arts and her patronage of the performing arts, particularly the theater. In this image, Anne is depicted in a sumptuous low-cut dress, her rosy cheeks glowing with youth and vitality. The queen's elegant neckline and intricately detailed collar draw the eye, while her regal bearing and confident expression convey her strength and determination. Anne's reign came to an end in 1714 when she died at the age of 49, leaving no surviving children to inherit the throne. Her passing marked the end of the House of Stuart and the beginning of the Hanoverian dynasty. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable monarch, whose legacy continues to shape British history." Mary Evans Picture Library / Mary Evans Prints Online.
