1800 1882 Bouverie Depicted Disciples Followers Pusey Theologian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), the influential Anglican theologian and leader of the Oxford Movement, surrounded by his devoted disciples. Taken in 1882, the image offers a glimpse into the intellectual and spiritual community that Pusey had cultivated during his influential career. Born into a prominent Anglican family, Pusey initially studied at Christ Church, Oxford, before turning to theology. He became a fellow of Oriel College in 1823 and was ordained a deacon and priest in 1827. Pusey's theological views began to diverge from the mainstream Anglican Church during the 1830s, leading him to become a key figure in the Oxford Movement, which sought to re-establish the Church of England's historical and spiritual connections to the early Church. Pusey's teachings emphasized the importance of tradition, sacraments, and the authority of the Bible, and he was a vocal critic of the Church's liberalism and secularization. His writings and sermons attracted a devoted following, and the photograph shows some of his most dedicated disciples gathered around him. These men, including John Keble and John Henry Newman, would go on to become leaders in their own right and help shape the future of Anglicanism. Despite facing criticism and opposition from some quarters, Pusey's influence continued to grow. He was made a Canon of Windsor in 1845 and a Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford in 1866. Pusey's legacy can still be felt in the Anglican Communion today, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the intellectual and spiritual community he built around him.
