The year is 146 BC, and Scipio, a brilliant military strategist, had blockaded Carthage's harbor, cutting off the city's vital supply lines. The people of Carthage, desperate and starving, were left with no choice but to negotiate for peace. Scipio, however, was not content with a simple surrender. He sought to ensure Rome's dominance and leave no trace of Carthage's power. In a move that would later be labeled as "perfidious," Scipio demanded that the Carthaginians hand over their most valuable treasures and surrender their arms. The unsuspecting Carthaginians, trusting in the promise of mercy, complied. But Scipio had no intention of sparing the city. As soon as the Carthaginians had surrendered their weapons and treasures, Scipio ordered his soldiers to sack and raze the city to the ground. The once-great city of Carthage, a symbol of Phoenician civilization, was reduced to rubble.
