This evocative image captures the harsh realities of the 1849 Franklin Expedition, as Sir John Franklin's search party, led by officers John Pullen and William Pennington Hooper, set up camp for the night during their desperate quest to locate the missing explorers. The scene is one of survival, as the men huddle around a small fire, cooking their meager rations of pemmican and boiling water for tea. The air is thick with the smell of smoke and the chill of the polar night, as the men prepare for another frigid night in the unforgiving Arctic wilderness. The image, taken from a historical print by Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts Pullen and Hooper in their fur-lined parkas, their faces etched with the lines of exhaustion and determination that come from months of relentless searching.
