EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the proposed design for the new Eddystone Lighthouse, designed by Sir James Douglass in 1879. The original Eddystone Lighthouse, located off the coast of Devon, England, had become dangerously unstable due to the erosion of its foundations. The old lighthouse, first built in 1698 and rebuilt multiple times, had been an important navigational aid for over two centuries. Sir James Douglass, a renowned engineer and architect, was commissioned to design a replacement lighthouse that would withstand the harsh marine environment. His design featured a tower made of cast iron and granite, standing 115 feet tall with a focal plane height of 137 feet. The new lighthouse was also equipped with a powerful light, capable of being seen up to 18 miles at sea. Despite the advances in technology and design, the construction of the new Eddystone Lighthouse was not without its challenges. The foundations had to be carefully laid to prevent the same erosion issues that plagued the old lighthouse. The construction was completed in 1882, and the new Eddystone Lighthouse has stood the test of time, continuing to provide essential navigational aid to mariners in the English Channel. This engraving, produced in 1879, provides a fascinating glimpse into the design process of one of the most iconic lighthouses in history. It serves as a reminder of the importance of innovation and perseverance in the face of adversity, as well as the vital role that lighthouses play in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
