1702 Cevennes Edict Manifest Nantes Persecuted Prophets Protestantism Protestants Remarkable Convulsions Prophesying

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the intensity and desperation of the Prophets of the Cevennes, a group of French Protestants who experienced remarkable religious manifestations during the persecution following King Louis XIV's revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The Edict of Nantes, signed in 1598, granted religious tolerance to Huguenots, or French Protestants, allowing them to practice their faith freely. However, in 1685, Louis XIV, under pressure from the Catholic Church, issued an edict revoking the Edict of Nantes, leading to widespread persecution of Protestants. In response to this persecution, the Prophets of the Cevennes emerged in the region of Cevennes in southern France. They were known for their prophesying, convulsions, and ecstatic trances, which drew large crowds and gained widespread attention. The Prophets believed that God was guiding them through these experiences and that they were chosen to lead their fellow Protestants through the difficult times. This photograph, taken circa 1702, depicts a group of Prophets in the midst of a religious fervor. Their intense expressions and gestures convey the depth of their belief and the urgency of their message. The Prophets' perseverance in the face of persecution and their remarkable manifestations served as a source of hope and inspiration for the beleaguered Protestant community. The Prophets of the Cevennes played a significant role in the Protestant resistance movement, inspiring many to flee to Switzerland and other Protestant strongholds. Their legacy continues to be celebrated in the history of Protestantism and the history of religious persecution in France.
