EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures Priscilla Kemble (nee Hopkins), a renowned English actress of the 18th and 19th centuries, in the role of Irene in John Browne's "Barbarossa." Priscilla, born in 1756, was the daughter of the famous actor-manager, Charles Hopkins. She made her stage debut at the age of 13 and went on to become a leading actress in her own right. In this portrait, Priscilla exudes grace and elegance as she portrays Irene, a character from John Browne's historical play. The image, taken in 1845, captures the mature beauty and poise of the actress, who would later become the wife of the esteemed actor John Philip Kemble. Priscilla and John Philip Kemble were married in 1782 and had a successful acting partnership, with Priscilla often playing the female lead in many of her husband's productions. Despite her success on the stage, Priscilla's personal life was not without its challenges. She was known for her tempestuous personality and her love affairs, which often made headlines in the gossip columns of the day. However, her talent and charisma on stage remained unmatched, and she continued to captivate audiences until her retirement in 1837. This photograph is a rare and beautiful reminder of the extraordinary career of Priscilla Kemble, a true icon of the English stage, and a testament to her enduring legacy as an actress and a wife.
