EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Princess Sophie of Prussia, Queen of the Hellenes, in the year 1905, at the height of her beauty and grace. Born on January 15, 1870, in Berlin, Germany, Sophie was the eldest daughter of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia and Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt. Her regal lineage and striking features made her a popular figure in European society. In 1896, Sophie married King Constantine I of Greece in a grand ceremony held in Athens. The union between the German princess and the Greek king was significant as it helped to strengthen the ties between Greece and Germany. As Queen of the Hellenes, Sophie was known for her dedication to her new country and its people. She was an advocate for women's education and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the less fortunate. This photograph, taken during her visit to Germany in 1905, shows Sophie in a casual yet elegant pose, wearing a simple yet stylish dress and holding a fan. Her expressive eyes and poised demeanor exude a sense of confidence and charm that made her a beloved figure in both Germany and Greece. Tragically, Sophie's life was cut short when she passed away on December 7, 1932, at the age of 62. Her death marked the end of an era in Greek history, as her husband was forced to abdicate the throne just a few months later due to political instability. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the history of both Prussia and Greece.
