EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving, we see a striking image of Princess Helene of Montenegro, also known as Princess Jelena, on the occasion of her marriage to the future King of Italy, Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel III, in October 1896. The young princess, born on July 21, 1873, in Montenegro, was the daughter of Prince Nikola I of Montenegro and his consort, Princess Milica of Serbia. At the time of her marriage, Princess Helene was just 23 years old, while her groom was 31. The union between the Montenegrin and Italian royal families was significant, as it marked the first time that a member of the House of Petrović-Njegoš had married into a European royal house of equal rank. The wedding ceremony took place in the Royal Palace of Turin, Italy, and was attended by numerous European monarchs and dignitaries. Princess Helene's elegant and sophisticated appearance is captured beautifully in this engraving. She is depicted wearing a long, flowing white gown, adorned with intricate lace and beadwork, and a diadem in her dark hair. The princess's serene expression and regal posture convey a sense of grace and poise, reflecting the important role she was about to assume as the future Queen of Italy. The marriage of Princess Helene and Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel III lasted until 1946, when the monarchy was abolished in Italy following the end of World War II. Princess Helene passed away on July 13, 1952, at the age of 79, in exile in Portugal. This engraving serves as a reminder of an important moment in European royal history, as well as a testament to the beauty and elegance of Princess Helene of Montenegro.
