EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, taken around 1875, we see the children of Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-1878) and her husband, Grand Duke Louis (Ludwig) IV of Hesse and by Rhine (1837-1892). The children, all dressed in their Sunday best, are seated in a cozy and sunlit room. From left to right, we see Princesses Irene (b. 1866), Ernst Ludwig (b. 1868), Marie (b. 1874), Victoria (b. 1863), Alix (b. 1872, later Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia), and Ella (b. 1864). The youngest daughter, Alix, is seated in front, holding a toy. Princess Alice, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was a beloved and respected figure in European royal circles. Her marriage to Grand Duke Louis, the heir to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, was a happy one, and the couple had six children in quick succession. This photograph captures the joy and warmth of their family life. The eldest child, Irene, would go on to marry Prince Henry of Prussia in 1891. Ernst Ludwig became Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine in 1892, following his father's death. Marie married Prince Frederick of Saxe-Meiningen in 1891, while Victoria married Prince Adolf of Schleswig-Holstein in 1885. Alix, the future Tsarina of Russia, would marry Tsar Nicholas II in 1894, and Ella married Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1896. This photograph is a precious reminder of the close-knit royal family and the happiness they shared in their childhood. It is a poignant reminder of the lives that were to come, filled with both triumphs and tragedies, for these young royals.
